We've featured kogonada's supercuts before: Kubrick's One Point Perspective and the Sounds of Aronovsky.
From kogonada:
"The films of Ozu are filled with people walking through alleys and hallways: the in-between spaces of modern life. This is where Ozu resides. In the transitory. It’s what he values as a filmmaker. Alleys are not an opportunity for suspense but for passage.
*Passageways is made up of Ozu’s final six films: Equinox Flower (Higanbana), Good Morning (Ohayo), Floating Weeds (Ukigusa), Late Autumn (Akibiyori), The End of Summer (Kohayagawa-ke no aki), and An Autumn Afternoon (Sanma no aji)"

So this is what I did over this past winter when I was not making people coffee. It's all time-lapse footage shot in and around Anchorage, Alaska, with the emphasis on the nature around the city rather then on the people and buildings. This is a collection of the nicer stuff I shot of the northern lights, stars, sunset, and the tide. All of this was shot between October 2011 and April 2012. The music is Aston's Classical Cover of the song You've Got The Love by Florence & The Machine. http://www.youtube.com/astonmusic Music used with the bands permission. : ) Equipment used: Canon 5D Mark II Canon Rebel xTi (modified to full spectrum) Canon EF 24 - 105 mm Sigma DC 18 - 200 mm Sigma 8mm EX DG Fisheye (a thoroughly epic lens) Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly (kinda beyond epic) Orion TeleTrack AZ-G Mount (really good for astrophotography) Motorcycle and Car batteries from my locale battery store And a lot of wires that connect everything together. Adobe Bridge CS4 and CS5 Adobe Photoshop CS4 Adobe Lightroom 3 LRTimelapse (pretty much the most amazing software ever) Hugin (for unwrapping the 8mm shots) Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 (for making the stills move) (Please note that the colours look different (like a lot) on different screens. The colours here look desaturated from the original file on my screen. But the colours look like the original on other screens, but not all, I'm not sure why.)
This film was shot mainly around the Tromvik area of Northern Norway at approximately 70 degrees North. Tromvik is located right in the heart of the aurora belt and because of this even quiet displays of the Aurora Borealis will always be visible overhead on clear nights. I was very lucky in the time that I visited in that a CME (coronal mass ejection) from the sun hit on the first night I arrived. The earths magnetic field reverberated for the entire week that I was there and I was lucky to witness strong displays every night. The Aurora Borealis is the most beautiful natural phenomenon I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. I love astronomy, and for me there is nothing more tranquil that watching our own galaxy rise but the Northern lights was quite a different experience, one that was in some ways even more humbling. I was fascinated with how the aurora changed so quickly, from rolling like a never ending curtain of soft light stretching, weaving and contorting itself across the Arctic sky, to sharp fingers of green and red piercing the black to its own percussive rhythm. A friend of mine spoke to a native Norwegian shortly before I embarked on this trip and he told him that Norway "is good for the soul" And after visiting I could not agree more. SAMSARA is in theaters now in the USA, UK, Germany, Canada, and more. FULL THEATER INFO HERE: http://www.barakasamsara.com/theaters ABOUT SAMSARA: Prepare yourself for an unparalleled sensory experience. SAMSARA reunites director Ron Fricke and producer Mark Magidson, whose award-winning films BARAKA and CHRONOS were acclaimed for combining visual and musical artistry. SAMSARA is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever turning wheel of life” and is the point of departure for the filmmakers as they search for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives. Filmed over a period of almost five years and in twenty-five countries, SAMSARA transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and natural wonders. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, SAMSARA subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, instead encouraging our own inner interpretations inspired by images and music that infuses the ancient with the modern. Expanding on the themes they developed in BARAKA (1992) and CHRONOS (1985), SAMSARA explores the wonders of our world from the mundane to the miraculous, looking into the unfathomable reaches of man’s spirituality and the human experience. Neither a traditional documentary nor a travelogue, SAMSARA takes the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation. Through powerful images, the film illuminates the links between humanity and the rest of nature, showing how our life cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet.
Director and cinematographer Ron Ficke (Koyaanisqatsi, Baraka) has been hard at work on Samsara for 5 years. The entire film is shot in stunning 70mm. It is a film that relies completely on its visual impact and cinematographic juxtaposition, as there isn't any dialogue.

I've been in Shanghai for almost 4 years, during which I enjoyed a 3-year timelapse experience. The scenes from Shanghai's every corner almost certainly formed the main clips of my timelapse work. In Shanghai, usually I did timelapse whenever and wherever possible, no matter working or being on holiday, waking or sleeping (coz sometimes I left my camera working on the roof for the sunrise: P). Thus, I got tons of timelapse clips about this city. I never knew when I could make something from what I had gotten, until one day my friend LT came to me, talking about making a black-and-white Shanghai timelapse. It was really a cool idea to me. Soon I started coloring a couple of clips into BW just to get a little bit feeling. Later, it was a New York timelapse I saw before that gave me the inspiration of the music - deep male vocal, slight electronic, and storytelling. "The Books", which came to my mind, undoubtedly was a optimal match to my crossed line mood. I kept listening to their music until I found "Thirty Incoming". ... That is the whole preparation about this short. Producer: Luo Tong www.lpfilms.net Director, Cameraman, Editor: Liu Jia www.Jiavision.net Music: Thirty Incoming - The Books http://www.thebooksmusic.com/ Additional footage from Joe Nafis Opening picture from: Kevin Gu, Zokki Zhang, Lin Hang, Paul Shubsky, Liu Jia Equipment: Canon 5DMKII, Canon 550D, Canon Powershot A630 16-35mm/2.8, 24-105mm/4, 10-22mm, 18-135mm Edited with Final Cut Pro, graded with Colorista II and Nattress.
Awesome looking timelapse exploration of one of the world's most vibrant cities.

It has been an intense week, spent answering a ton of nice messages that people from all over the world sent to me. You made possible to have this video featured on blogs, forums and major media websites during this week. You helped this video crossing borders, as the astronauts asked us, reaching out to every continent. Thanks for your incredible support. Keep sharing! ***TO THE STARS!*** A timelapse message from ISS to all Humankind. - 2K version available on my blog: http://wp.me/p2fVm6-bv I wanted to use pictures taken from the International Space Station to tell a story and share the message sent by the astronauts who worked on the station in the last 11 years. They are working to open a Gateway to Space for all humankind, but people on Earth must understand that they have to get rid of the concept of borders on our planet if they want to follow the astronauts to new worlds in outer space. While the cosmonauts speak a day passes on Earth, from dawn to sunset, until the Gateway opens with a burst of light. The ISS then gains speed, the astronauts are leaving our planet which they see spinning faster and faster, merging earth, oceans and people together, ready to follow them, Further Up Yonder. Making of As a filmmaking student, this was my first attempt to craft a timelapse video. It has been a time consuming process, but it turned out as one of my most satisfying projects. I focused my workflow on colours and harmony of movements, syncing every frame with the music and the voices of the astronauts. Every picture has been post processed individually before being imported in the NLE software, as I tried to take the most out of every image in terms of colours, contrast and neatiness. Pictures were downloaded from the Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center and edited with Photoshop CS6. Even if they were Hi-res images shot with Nikon D3S cameras, a lot of noise removal and color correction was needed, especially for those shots at ISO 3200, which was the highest ISO speed limit I've allowed myself to use, exception made for the last sequence of the spinning world, which comes from a sequenze of shots taken at ISO 12800. Daytime shots were taken at ISO 200. I've used Topaz Denoise 5 for noise removal, as it is very powerful and accurate when dealing with shadows and blacks. Editing was made with Adobe Premiere CS6, with a 2K workflow, which allowed me to scale, rotate and pan image sequences whose native resolution is 4K. The video was downscaled to 1280x720 resolution for Vimeo. The original 2K version is available for download on my blog (link on top of this description). Poem of the Day
“Burneshas,” or females who have lived their lives as men in Albania society to escape the old codes that governed the tribal clans, with women as the property of their husbands, are captured in the moving portraits in the series Sworn Virgins of Albania, by photographer Jill Peters.
Peters:
I learned that the Burrnesha are well respected within their communities. They possess an indescribable amount of strength and pride, and value their family honor above all else. Their absolute transition is wholly accepted, posited and taken without question by the people among whom they live. But most surprising, is they have very few regrets for the great deal they have sacrificed.
The freedom to vote, drive, conduct business, earn money, drink, smoke, swear, own a gun or wear pants was traditionally the exclusive province of men. Young girls were commonly forced into arranged marriages, often with much older men in distant villages. As an alternative, becoming a Sworn Virgin, or ‘burnesha” elevated a woman to the status of a man and granted her all the rights and privileges of the male population. In order to manifest the transition such a woman cut her hair, donned male clothing and sometimes even changed her name. Male gestures and swaggers were practiced until they became second nature. Most importantly of all, she took a vow of celibacy to remain chaste for life. She became a “he”. This practice continues today but as modernization inches toward the small villages nestled in the Alps, this archaic tradition is increasingly seen as obsolete. Only a few aging Sworn Virgins remain.

Celebrate our final night on earth. Happy Apocalypse! List of music and films used in the description. Our last night on earth; what better way to spend it than with Cinema. Avengers assembled, dark knights rose and odds were in our favor in a fantastic year in film.
For the past five years, film student Kees van Dijkhuizen Jr. has made a supercut of the year in film. This is lovely and moving. Better in fact that a lot of the films he includes.
If there were a spectrum of the state of matter, icebergs would be about halfway between sky and stone. With a lot of the structure and scale of rock with the ephemeralness of water. These absolutely stunning images come from Nuremberg-based photographer Jan Erik Waider.

The Sleepers

Now of the older war-days, the defeat at Brooklyn,
Washington stands inside the lines, he stands on the
intrench'd hills amid a crowd of officers,
His face is cold and damp, he cannot repress the
weeping drops,
He lifts the glass perpetually to his eyes, the color
is blanch'd from his cheeks,
He sees the slaughter of the southern braves confided
to him by their parents.
The same at last and at last when peace is declared,
He stands in the room of the old tavern, the
well-belov'd soldiers all pass through,
The officers speechless and slow draw near in their
turns,
The chief encircles their necks with his arm and kisses
them on the cheek,
He kisses lightly the wet cheeks one after another, he
shakes hands and bids good-by to the army.

Now what my mother told me one day as we sat at dinner
together,
Of when she was a nearly grown girl living home with
her parents on the old homestead
A red squaw came one breakfast-time to the old
homestead,
On her back she carried a bundle of rushes for
rush-bottoming chairs,
Her hair, straight, shiny, coarse, black, profuse,
half-envelop'd her face,
Her step was free and elastic, and her voice sounded
exquisitely as she spoke.
My mother look'd in delight and amazement at the
stranger,
She look'd at the freshness of her tall-borne face and
full and pliant limbs,
The more she look'd upon her she loved her,
Never before had she seen such wonderful beauty and
purity,
She made her sit on a bench by the jamb of the
fireplace, she cook'd food for her,
She had no work to give her, but she gave her
remembrance and fondness.
The red squaw staid all the forenoon, and toward the
middle of the afternoon she went away,
O my mother was loth to have her go away,
All the week she thought of her, she watch'd for her
many a month,
She remember'd her many a winter and many a summer,
But the red squaw never came nor was heard of there
again.
