Filip Smart Watch for Kids - Design Wish

Ryan Nance March 11, 2014

This little watch, the Filip, is billed as a kid tracker or a smart watch, and it seems a little of both. It also has a very cool Dick Tracey communicator thing going on too. It can place calls to 5 preset numbers and receive texts from a paired iPhone app.

Growing Images with Bacteria

Ryan Nance April 18, 2013

Both a microbiologist and a visual artist, Zachary Copfer has created this innovative scientific technique to grow bacteria in a Petri dish to create an image: ‘Bacteriography‘.

Find him on Kickstarter where he’s trying to raise $8000, so he can bring them out of the lab and into galleries.

3 - Ice Record

Ryan Nance December 27, 2012

Swedish indie rockers Shout Out Louds wanted to make a splash to introduce "Blue Ice," the first single off their upcoming Optica. The worked tiwhTBWA Stockholm, to make a kit that would make a playable record out of ice.

They sent out only 10 kits to fans and press. Fascinating idea.

4 - Hand Crank USB Charger

Ryan Nance November 5, 2012

Yeah, if I had the money, I would send these rechargeable hand-crank USB chargers to everyone I know and care about.

Not only is it clearly an essential for emergencies  but with our dependence on our phones and tablets, seems like a basic travel essential. I am pre-ordering mine.

5 - With Tablets, Remote Kids Learn to Teach Themselves

Ryan Nance November 5, 2012

"Earlier this year, One Laptop Per Child workers dropped off closed boxes containing the tablets, taped shut, with no instruction. “I thought the kids would play with the boxes. Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, found the on-off switch … powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child, per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs in the village, and within five months, they had hacked Android,” Negroponte said. “Some idiot in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera, and they figured out the camera, and had hacked Android.”

4 - Tenori On Used to Great Effect by Little Boots

Ryan Nance September 9, 2012

The very interesting tech--instrument, the Tenori On seems like a toy, until in the hands of a talent. Here, for example, is Little Boots making music all on her own. It is so great to see here layer elements on, and hear it come together.
