Shank Shack - 30 Shanks in 30 Days

Ryan Nance November 28, 2017

From the project page:

"Sharp, knifelike utensils have been made by humans for the last 2.6 million years. All cultures make use of a form of a knife and there are hundreds of types made from metal, plastic, stone, ceramic, glass and wood. For the launch of the web store, Chen Chen and Kai Williams present Shank Shack, 30 shanks in 30 days. These sharp utensils were made as an exercise in experimentation of connections and manipulation of proportions and materials. All pieces in the series achieve one goal and show the myriad of methods one could improvise to achieve that goal. All pieces are unique works and are signed and numbered."

Updated- New 8-bit Paintings by Adam Lister

Ryan Nance December 8, 2014

Adam Lister has a pretty keen sense of style and humor. His 8-bit paintings, ranging from Breaking Bad, Super Heroes, and Star Wars to versions of Van Gogh and other iconic paintings, could just be a gag. But instead they have a tone and feel about them that is part nostalgic, part irreverent: a delicate homage.

You should buy these as giclee prints on his website.

Meso-American Gods series in Crayon by Rogelio Lara

Ryan Nance July 13, 2014

Rogelio Lara:

I picked up crayon from substitute teaching elementary. I drew them as rewards for the kids and started to really like what I drew. I started posting them on Facebook to get this girl's attention I got such a positive reaction from people that I kept on going. This particular series - Mythological Dreams - comes from my interest in Mythology - I played Dungeons and Dragons as a kid, and when my Philosophy professor introduced me to Joseph Campbell in community college I realized the importance and insight of the messages behind the mythology which only made me love it more.

Recycled Paper Sculptures from Finnish Artist Janna Syvänoja

Ryan Nance January 9, 2014

Finnish paper artist Janna Syvänoja (http://www.jannasyvanoja.com ) uses printed paper, maps, catalogues and phone books to create her work

Syvänoja:  "I can make the rules, but the piece takes the shape of its own. When certain formed components start to follow each other and find their rhythm in my hands, the miracle happens."

The Egg: A temporary, energy efficient, self-sustaining work space for artist Stephen Turner

Ryan Nance June 19, 2013

On the River Beaulieu estuary, The Egg is designed as a place to stay as well as a temporary, energy efficient, self-sustaining work space for artist Stephen Turner. The Egg will be ‘tethered’ like a boat and will rise and fall with the tide.

Brought to Tears by The Artist is Present

Ryan Nance May 12, 2013

From the tumblr Marina Abramović Made Me Cry:

"Portraits taken during the MoMA's exhibit of performance artist "Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present". Abramović sits at a table in silence, and museum guests can sit across from her and stare.

Some people couldn't handle the heat."

The criers range from sitting with Abramovic from 2 mins to 145 mins before the tears started.

Included in the mix is Jemima Kirke who plays dreamy bohemian Jessa on Lena Dunham's hit HBO show "Girls".

While it's not the camera, it's the not the software, it's not the lens, it's not the gear that makes a great photo so great, they all do help the photographer capture what it is his eye wants us to see.

It's an interesting thing: the site where something creative happened. Was the place, a la ancient Delphi, the source of inspiration? Or did the sheer act of creation leave an aura, a faint scent of genius that we all can inhale in hopes of it seeping into our own desperate attempts to pull something from non-existence into existence.

In a lot of ways it's similar to visiting a reliquary to be able to touch (or at least see) the finger of a saint. Half in desire to see for ourselves and half in the hopes of being infected by the seeds of a greater existence.

I would imagine for painters it would be different. It would be a bit of cross-temporal visual conversation: shop talk.

Are there artists studios you'd most like to see (either in person or in photos)?
