New Media Chinese Art from Yang Yongliang

Shanghai-based artist Yang Yongliang has taken the eyes and heart of the more traditional Chinese landscape and calligraphy, and invested it with the expressive ability of the newest technology and techniques, including digital manipulation, video and photography.

"As long as the characteristics don't change, the media you use to express the art doesn't matter."

I think these landscapes in Chinese Porcelain are pretty amazing, and I am absolutely in love with the video landscapes.

Here is a sample of the video referenced in the Creator's Project piece:

Wyoming Wildscapes

One of the first websites I made as a User Experience Designer was the state tourism website for Wyoming. I'd never been to Wyoming, so I got a couple chances to go around the state. Not just beautiful, but beautiful in ways I'd never considered.

This video captures a lot of that.

City Series: Seattle

2013-06-08_17-03-04.png

Synopsis:
"Inspired by the avant-garde city symphony films of the early 20th century, such as Paul Strand's "Manhatta" and Dziga Vertov's "The Man With the Movie Camera," CITY SERIES: SEATTLE paints a masterful portrait of the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington. Utilizing experimental editing techniques, time-lapse, and beautiful cinematography, the film explores the poetic mode of documentary film to convey the experience of this iconic, Pacific Northwestern metropolis.

3 - Foursquare Check-ins for 4 days in Tokyo and NYC

Each dot represents a check-in during this 96 hour period. Super fascinating to see the different types of check-ins ripple across the city as time of day effects the rhythm of all of these individuals in a fairly regular pattern.

3 - Time Dance

Amazing short film titled "Choros":

A chorus of women are borne from the movements of a single dancer in this dreamlike "pas de trente-deux."

"Choros" premiered at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in 2012 and has gone on to play dozens of festivals worldwide. The film is currently broadcast in Europe by Canal+.

my pick - 5 things to buy a shoestring traveller - Devereau Chumrau
Even though some of my picks may appear to be "un-shoestring like," the main concern here is that you "shoestring" the trip and not the preparation for the trip.  Anyone who has tried to skimp in the beginning will probably end up paying much more later on... Remember YOU are all you have out there.

4 - Distorted Time

Gideon van der Stelt collaged film fragments, superimposing them onto a paper model of the Dutch city of Utrect (where I was lucky enough to spend about half a year) in a video titled Verknipte tijden (Distorted Times).

My Pick - 5 things to buy an aspiring Videographer - Stephen McFadden

Video is the new reading, the new literacy. And that makes videographers (camera operators, directors of photography, etc etc) the new scribes, wielding immense power in the capturing and communication of ideas and experiences.
