New Media Chinese Art from Yang Yongliang

How do you update an ancient art tradition? With Photoshop, of course. New media artist Yang Yongliang was classically trained in Chinese painting and calligraphy from a very young age but uses digital tools to capture that time-tested aesthetic. View the amazing results in the video above.

Shanghai-based artist Yang Yongliang has taken the eyes and heart of the more traditional Chinese landscape and calligraphy, and invested it with the expressive ability of the newest technology and techniques, including digital manipulation, video and photography.

"As long as the characteristics don't change, the media you use to express the art doesn't matter."

I think these landscapes in Chinese Porcelain are pretty amazing, and I am absolutely in love with the video landscapes.

Wyoming Wildscapes

It was one hell of a journey during the fourteen months making Wyoming Wildscapes II, my second and final Wyoming related time lapse project. Had plenty of adventures while working on this. Lightning almost got me a couple of times this summer, gear froze up in the winter (literally), and broke a few times (don't think most of the time lapse gear was meant for extended wilderness backpacking), all that fun stuff. Despite any minor set backs, this was without a doubt one of the most fulfilling personal projects I've ever undertaken. Saw some pretty amazing stuff along the way, this part of the country never ceases to amaze and surprise me. Song is 'Dance of the Seven Sisters' - by Ghost Kollective Thanks for watching! _______ Ghost Kollective did an absolutely amazing job on the custom track. I've enabled the tip jar and any tips given will be sent to Ghost K (through my lightalivephotography paypal) for creating this track without seeking payment. Or you can cut out the middle man, do one better, and buy some of their music! https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/stop-ep/id661261808 Ghost K links: http://www.ghostkollective.com/ http://www.youtube.com/ghostkollective https://www.facebook.com/GhostKollective _______ My links: https://www.facebook.com/LightalivePhotography http://www.lightalivephotography.com/ https://plus.google.com/+Lightalivephotography/posts Some long winded stuff here for anyone interested in reading more about Wyoming Wildscapes II, including a bit about licensing. http://www.lightalivephotography.com/wyoming-wildscapes-ii

One of the first websites I made as a User Experience Designer was the state tourism website for Wyoming. I'd never been to Wyoming, so I got a couple chances to go around the state. Not just beautiful, but beautiful in ways I'd never considered.

This video captures a lot of that.

City Series: Seattle

The third in a series of city symphonies. First in the series, New York: vimeo.com/51875528. Second, San Francisco: vimeo.com/57508140. Next, Los Angeles, coming July 1st. Synopsis: Inspired by the avant-garde city symphony films of the early 20th century, such as Paul Strand's "Manhatta" and Dziga Vertov's "The Man With the Movie Camera," CITY SERIES: SEATTLE paints a masterful portrait of the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington. Utilizing experimental editing techniques, time-lapse, and beautiful cinematography, the film explores the poetic mode of documentary film to convey the experience of this iconic, Pacific Northwestern metropolis. "In the the 1920s the movies were still relatively young, and an evolving modernist aesthetic embraced all things new, sleek, fast, and urban. Not surprisingly, a common focus of the cinematic avant-garde during this era was on the power, and excitement of cities. In both Europe and the US, a small genre of films that became know as 'city symphonies' attempted to capture the spirit, uniqueness, and poetry of a city by assembling images of everyday life in that city. These early films and their offsprings often utilized what film historian Bill Nichols has termed the 'poetic mode' of documentary film production--an attempt to move away from the 'objective' reality of a given situation or people in order to grasp at an inner 'truth' that can only be conveyed by poetical manipulations of mood, tone, time, and space." -University of California Berkeley Media Resources Center Music: Alone in Kyoto by Air. Shot on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera in ProRes 422HQ 1080p with a Rokinon Cine Lens 14mm T3.1, 35mm T1.5, and a Contineo Cage and Switronix battery pack. Graded in DaVinci Resolve. Last shot graded in Lightroom and recorded in Raw 2.5K. 3 - Foursquare Check-ins for 4 days in Tokyo and NYC

Every day, millions of people check in on Foursquare. We took a year's worth of check-ins in New York City and Tokyo and plotted them on a map. Each dot represents a single check-in, while the straight lines link sequential check-ins. What you can see here represents the power of check-in data -- on Foursquare, every city around the world pulses with activity around places every hour of every day. Related: Also see our data visualization of four days worth of Foursquare check-ins in New York CIty during Hurricane Sandy (and the subsequent power outage) during October 2012: http://vimeo.com/52883962.

Each dot represents a check-in during this 96 hour period. Super fascinating to see the different types of check-ins ripple across the city as time of day effects the rhythm of all of these individuals in a fairly regular pattern.

my pick - 5 things to buy a shoestring traveller - Devereau Chumrau
Even though some of my picks may appear to be "un-shoestring like," the main concern here is that you "shoestring" the trip and not the preparation for the trip.  Anyone who has tried to skimp in the beginning will probably end up paying much more later on... Remember YOU are all you have out there.

4 - Distorted Time

A collage of existing film fragments, released into my paper-folded version of Utrecht. Shot on a 7D and processed in After Effects.

Gideon van der Stelt collaged film fragments, superimposing them onto a paper model of the Dutch city of Utrect (where I was lucky enough to spend about half a year) in a video titled Verknipte tijden (Distorted Times).
