Vibrant Ferrofluid Images by Fabian Oefner

Ryan Nance November 3, 2017

We've seen Fabian Oefner's stunning work before. His colorful centrifuge and his high-speed photos of burning alcohol vapors left no doubt about his deftness as a photographer.

This project, injecting colors into a ferrofluid, is riotously gorgeous.  Ferrofluid is a liquid containing ferromagnetic particles that, when placed in a magnetic field becomes strongly magnetized.

Watch the making of video below and then check out the rest of the gorgeous set.

If you haven’t heard of ferrofluid before, prepare to become a fan. It’s basically a liquid that, when placed in a magnetic field becomes strongly magnetized. This is due to the liquid containing ferromagnetic particles. Ferrofluids are also superparamagnets, as they don’t remain magnetized once the magnetic field is removed.

Ferrolic was designed from a strong fascination for the magical material Ferro Fluid. The natural dynamics of this fluid makes that this display bridges the gap between everyday digital screens and tangible reality. Because the fluid behaves in a unpredictable way, it is possible to give the bodies perceived in the Ferrolic display a strong reference to living creatures. It is this lively hood that enables Ferrolic to show a meaning-full narrative like for instance having the creatures play tag. In addition the natural flow of the material, it can be used to form recognisable shapes and characters. Ferrolic uses these both layers in paralel in order to display scenes and transitions in an poetic, almost dance like, choregraphed way. Read more on ferrolic.com

Putty Made of Magnetic Stuff Makes for Some Trippy Putty

Magnetic putty is a lot like ferrofluids (Trippy Watercolor and Ferrofluid Photos July 5, 2012): magnetic particles suspended in a mixture. In the case of magnetic putty, it's thicker: you can mold and shape it with your hands and it will maintain its form.

But put it near a magnet, and look at it come to life. A bit creepy. Totally trippy.

Kinectic Sculptures from Laurent Debraux

Ryan Nance March 31, 2013

Artist Laurent Debraux was just at the Kinetica Art Fair in London.  Most of his works explore the nearly magical properties of magnets, metal and ferrofluid.

These are just three of the 40+ videos he's uploaded. Outstanding.
