In an effort to highlight the wildness of these mountain places and how they have inspired explorers of the past, present and future, time-lapse sequences were patiently gathered from exposed summits, by glacial lakes, and under aurora-filled skies. Hours and even months of change lapses in a matter of seconds, providing the viewer with a rare insight into the ever-changing nature of the landscape. Weaving throughout the film are reflections of an early mountaineer, who is deeply moved by his own encounter with the mountains and the revelations of explorers who have come before him. “What is this power that lures me upwards, into the unknown,” he wonders, “that pulls me deeper, despite snow, wind and exhaustion?” Made on a shoestring budget and with entirely volunteer hours, the film brought together artists from two vastly different parts of North America - Banff, Alberta, and Atlanta, Georgia. Strangers at the start, the film team developed strong friendships over the course of production and were united by their common goal of capturing the beauty and essence of a place that inspires them every day. This 100% human-powered film combines advanced time-lapse photography with an original story and musical score to bring the landscape center-stage and offers a thrilling new perspective that re-establishes the Canadian Rockies among the finest mountains in the world. 5 - The Star Filled Dark Skies of Namibia

It's not easy to come up with something new when you visit the same place every year for more than a decade. Over the years Marsel has created the most extensive and most popular night photography portfolio of Namibia on this planet, and two years ago he decided it was time to take it to the next level. The idea was to create a night photography timelapse video featuring his most popular subjects in this amazing country: the fairytale-like quivertrees and the eery, dead camelthorn trees in Deadvlei - something that had never been done before. But instead of going for static scenes, Marsel decided to add movement to the scenes by using a dolly system. All scenes were shot during the night with Nikon D3, D3s and D4 cameras. We used small headlights for selectively lighting trees and rocks, and we sometimes used the moon. The brighter the scene, the more moon there was at the time. For the arch scene we timed our shoot exactly with moonset, which involved quite a bit of calculating and planning. But the hardest one of all was probably the mist scene in Deadvlei. Mist in Deadvlei only occurs around five times a year, so we had to keep a close eye on the weather predictions and many attempts were unsuccessful. When we finally got it right, the results far exceeded our expectations and show Deadvlei as no one has ever seen it before. Each second of video consists of 30 photographs. In total, Marsel shot more than 16,000 images over a period of two years for this project. The video won First Prize in the 2012 Travel Photographer Of The Year Awards. Getting to a place with clear, dark skies can pay off with some of the richest, most nuanced views of the starfields. Namibia, apparently, is one of those places.

4 - Tornados in Timelapse

Chapter 19 from the Storm Lapse DVD with commentary: June 17, 2010 Southern Minnesota tornadoes. Time lapse of several tornadoes in southern Minnesota, including the mile wide Conger EF4. Music is courtesy Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com

Amateur storm chaser and videographer Skip Talbot explains:

The video was shot at 30 fps, and then sped up four times. When it’s sped up, four frames are blended into one. This 4x video was sped up another four times, the frames blended again. The result is very smooth. The trick is starting with video that’s been shot with exposure times close to the length of time between frames. I get this automatically using a camcorder. A still time-lapse with large time gaps between frames would require filters to extend exposure time and eliminate stutter

my pick - 5 things to buy a shoestring traveller - Devereau Chumrau
Even though some of my picks may appear to be "un-shoestring like," the main concern here is that you "shoestring" the trip and not the preparation for the trip.  Anyone who has tried to skimp in the beginning will probably end up paying much more later on... Remember YOU are all you have out there.

2 - Bird Ballet

We were shooting for a commercial with my D.O.P, waiting for an helicopter flying into the sunset, when thousands and thousands of birds came and made this incredible dance in the sky. It was amazing, we just forgot our job and started this little piece of poetry... Enjoy ! Thanks to the birds... (I'm not sure but I think it's starlings ) Please watch it in HD. Made by: Neels CASTILLON DOP: Mathias Touzeris Music: Hand-made - Alt J Location: Marseille, France

Waiting to catch a helicopter against a bright sunset,  commercial filmmaker Neels Castillon and his DP Mathias Touzeris caught this achingly beautiful footage of starling murmation and set it to Hand-Made by Alt-J.
