Don Komarechka, an Ontario, Canada-based photographer:
"The process is unlike most other photographers who shoot snowflakes, and allows me to play with prismatic color and surface reflections to a much greater degree."
He take multiple images he's shot of the snowflakes (against a plain black mitten his grandmother gave him) at different focus distances and merges them together.

Photographer Michele Pallazzo captured this stunning painting-like photo from the #blizzard2016 of the iconic Flatiron Building on 14th Street in Manhattan.
From 1949, this film by the National Film Board of Canada shows how, using only snow and a knife, an igloo is built by two Inuit men in Canada’s Far North.
From picking the right site, carving and stacking the snow blocks, the hour and a half of work creates enough warmth inside to protect people from the harshest conditions.
Led by artist Sonja Hinrichsen, a 50+ volunteers trace out these enormous swirling decorative designs on the frozen Catamount Lake in Colorado.
From her project statement:
It is important to me that participants experience the elements of nature while they help me transform their own familiar snow landscape into a piece of art. I hope that the aerial photographs that I take right after completion of each piece can demonstrate also to a larger audience how the landscape is transformed into a piece of art through a system of designs. This changes our perception of the landscape and accentuates the beauty and magic of the natural environment, and thus inspires awe and appreciation for art as well as for nature. I deem this important – especially as modern society becomes increasingly disconnected from the natural world.
Normally, researchers observe snow crystals at moderate levels of magnification (30X-500X). The electron microscope, however, allows for observation at over 100,000X.
The festival in the city of Sapporo on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, the Sapporo Snow Festival has been taking place since the early '80s and attracting millions of visitors.

New York-based photographer Brian Maffitt created these stunning long-exposure light painting photos by projecting a movie onto the falling snow of the storm that hit the Northeast in order to light up the snowflakes.
