Snowflakes: Clear and Up Close

Ryan Nance January 15, 2018

Don Komarechka, an Ontario, Canada-based photographer:

"The process is unlike most other photographers who shoot snowflakes, and allows me to play with prismatic color and surface reflections to a much greater degree."

He take multiple images he's shot of the snowflakes (against a plain black mitten his grandmother gave him) at different focus distances and merges them together.

While it's not the camera, it's the not the software, it's not the lens, it's not the gear that makes a great photo so great, they all do help the photographer capture what it is his eye wants us to see.

Snow Crystals In Electron Microscopes

Ryan Nance November 13, 2014

Normally, researchers observe snow crystals at moderate levels of magnification (30X-500X). The electron microscope, however, allows for observation at over 100,000X.

2 - Macro Photographs of Starfish Details

Ryan Nance February 7, 2013

Semenov says about his underwater photography:

When I first began to experiment with sea life photography I tried shooting small invertebrates for fun with my own old DSLR camera and without any professional lights or lenses. I collected the invertebrates under water and then I’ve shot them in the lab. After two or three months of failure after failure I ended up with a few good pictures, which I’ve showed to the crew. It has inspired us to buy a semi-professional camera complete with underwater housing and strobes. Thus I’ve spent the following field season trying to shoot the same creatures, but this time in their environment. It was much more difficult, and I spent another two months without any significant results. But when you’re working at something every day, you inevitably get a lot of experience. Eventually I began to get interesting photos — one or two from each dive. Now after four years of practice I get a few good shots almost every time I dive but I still have a lot of things that need to be mastered in underwater photography.

2 - Micro-Flora

Ryan Nance October 2, 2012

Rob Kesseler is a British professor and photographer with an acute interest in the microscopic details of exotic flora. Right at the edge where science breaks through into art, these images have had their colors modified to allow for structural differences to be visible, but result in stunning images on their own.
