Contemporary choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and 17 Buddhist monks ages 10-26, from the Shaolin Temple in China, present Sutra.
Sutra a "unique, profoundly imagined work" (The Guardian) is a collaboration between one of Europe's most exciting dancer-choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Turner Prize-winning sculptor Antony Gormley and 17 practicing Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple in China. It is a piece of dance that is at once deeply hypnotic, playful and breathtakingly athletic.
What if we could escape our daily routine for a moment ? A Step, just one, that could move us miles away from here, in a second; a flash step. A Shunpo. Shunpo was shot in 6 days in 13 different locations in Paris plus one in Turkey at "Tuz Gölü" salt lake. The camera used was a Canon 5D Mark III with 16-35 L, 24-70L and 70-200L lenses. Shunpo (瞬歩) is a step or movement faster than the eye can detect. And this dance video evokes shunpo in clever ways.
Atlanta-based artist Shana Robbins' costumed and choreographed rituals of passage create her odd and evocative vision of theatre.
From the exhibition page:
[Her] works address conditions of feminine power, natural phenomena, and cycles of life and death. Using a variety of media, she presents herself as a solitary and galvanizing figure, elaborately costumed and performing ritualized gestures in unique landscapes. Drawing on her own experiences as model and student of Butoh movement, and on numerous mythologies that link womanhood with the Earth and roles of conduit and healer, Robbins creates composite narratives of identity and transformation.

"I've been making these small dance films for about a year and a half, and much of it started with me "running around in my living room," as one curator put it. Lately, however, my energies have been invested in more involved, devised choreographies with a full company of dancers, so when I turned to my latest living room of a studio, I found myself fidgeting to the point of flailing in an attempt to find a dance. And yet, by imposing a frame which restricted my own view of the body, I was overwhelmed with a feeling of dismemberment and a disjointing of the body. From this, my newfound body cultivated a dance in cycles of flailing collapse and fidgeting recovery."
