With a mix of stunning videos, interactive features and narration from some of the Park Rangers, this project, The Hidden World of The National Parks, is deeply satisfying.

Stylish Metro Maps of World Cities

Ryan Nance October 30, 2016

These gorgeous and stylish metro maps for world cities look to not only display location and distance, but time and direction as well. The project from architect Jug Cerovic looks at the layouts of the world's major cities' metro system, but they are beautiful enough to hang on your wall. I want to collect all of the cities I've visited. What a gallery that would make.

Check out all of the cities

Open Air Hotel Room in the Alps

Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, in Graubünden, the hotel Null Stern (Zero Stars in English) delivers for true nature lovers an unprecedented night under the stars. This "room" was imagined and created by hoteliers Frank and Patrick Riklin, without walls or ceiling for the sake of the panorama. It costs $245 a night, with a discount when bad weather arrives. It's worth noting the bathroom is a 10-minute walk.

4 - Sound Recordings from Around the World

Ryan Nance March 22, 2013

Sound has a special place in our array of senses... often the passage of time is marked by sound (drumbeat, clock tick, cicada, footsteps). So Soundtransit.nl (while almost entirely outmoded by SoundCloud) has in its libraries magical time and space travel technology. Here are some of my favorites.

Flamenco in a park in Sevilla, Espana

Ole Ole at a Football match in San Sebastian

Near Yang-ming Shan in Taipei

Seafood Market in Taiwan

Accordian in Den Hague

Capoeira in the Cape Verde Islands

Music for the Barong Dance in Bali

Midday Prayer in Cairo

2 - "Strange Rock"

Ryan Nance December 6, 2012

Kummakivi means "strange rock." It's an extremely rare natural phenomenon in Valtola Savoni, Finland. One enormous rock balanced on another, in the middle of the forest? Yeah, "strange".

Even though some of my picks may appear to be "un-shoestring like," the main concern here is that you "shoestring" the trip and not the preparation for the trip.  Anyone who has tried to skimp in the beginning will probably end up paying much more later on... Remember YOU are all you have out there.
