Poem of the Day - Musee des Beaux Arts by W.H. Auden

Ryan Nance September 7, 2017
Musee des Beaux Arts

by W. H. Auden

About suffering they were never wrong,
The old Masters: how well they understood
Its human position: how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water, and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,

Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.

Auden's articulateness resists the ineffable nearly successfully in this poem.

Books as Canvas for Childhood Memories

Ryan Nance June 13, 2013

A press release on the work of Rome-based Russian artist Ekaterina Panikanova reads:

"[T]he proposition of the artist is based on the metaphor of the oyster and the pearl: the entrance of the sand represents a stress element for the shell and starts the expulsion and the production of the pearl. This metaphor indicates that since childhood, everyone holds a storage of images, traumas and experiences that they carry for all their lives."

Hyper Realistic Paintings of Toys

Ryan Nance April 18, 2013

Canadian Jason de Graaf creates these acrylic paintings that test your own eyes, so detailed, so attuned to the nuance of perception, light and perspective. They seem almost unbelievably photographic.

5 - Disasterland from José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros

Ryan Nance July 26, 2012

Pop culture worlds tear at on another in José Rodolfo Loaiza's Disasterland show at La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles.

The reimagining of Frida Kahlo's iconic painting is perhaps my favorite. But really quite an astounding range here.
