A Monument of Light - Turning a Gigantic Gas Tank into 320° LICHT | SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

Ryan Nance July 19, 2016

This gorgeous reuse of an industrial gas tank as a canvas for a light project show called 320° LICHT | SPATIAL EXPERIENCE melds the spatial and the virtual to amazing effect.

From the project page:

"The ‘320° Licht’ installation of URBANSCREEN uses the cathedral-like beauty of the Gasometer Oberhausen as the starting point for a fascinating game with shapes and light.

Within a radius of 320 degrees graphic patterns grow and change on the 100-metre high inside wall of the Gasometer.

The observer experiences the interplay between real and virtual space, in which the Gasometer seems to dissolve into its own, filigree structures and yet finally always reverts to its clear shape. ’320° Licht’ is achieved with kind project support from Epson Germany.

With approx. 20,000 square meters of area played upon, the installation is among the world’s largest and technically most sophisticated interior projections - interconnecting 21 powerful projectors to one projection screen."

Finnish Silo Turned into A Modern Take on the Lighthouse

Ryan Nance January 17, 2014

In honor of Helsinki being named  the World Design Capital of 2012, Madrid-based design firm Lighting Design Collective (LDC) to created a permanent urban art light piece.

The Director of LDC, Tapio Rosenius:

“At night 1250 white LED’s flicker and sway on the surface of the silo controlled by a bespoke software mimicking swarms of birds in flight – a reference to silo´s seaside location. The prevailing winds, well-known to those living in Helsinki, are used to trigger different light patterns in real time.

‘The enduring fascination of the complex movement of light and the amazing location by the sea will make this a captivating experience for the visitors and the residents of Helsinki.”

Kinectic Art: Vibrating Rope Reveals the Spectrum

Ryan Nance April 14, 2013

Paul Friedlander, a British artist and physicist, creates these pieces light and motion by rapidly rotating a piece of string through white light. The rope, invisible to the human eye while vibrating so quickly, reveals otherwise invisible bands of color.

by Paul Friedlander. Experimental hand held light sculpture, London studio 2004 http://www.paulfriedlander.com/text/videos.htm

Friedlander:

"I decided to focus on kinetic art: a subject in which I could bring together my divided background and combine my knowledge of physics with my love of light. In 1983, at London's ICA, I exhibited the first sculptures to use chromastrobic light, a discovery I had made the previous year. Chromastrobic light changes color faster than the eye can see, causing the appearance of rapidly moving forms to mutate in the most remarkable ways."

Even though some of my picks may appear to be "un-shoestring like," the main concern here is that you "shoestring" the trip and not the preparation for the trip.  Anyone who has tried to skimp in the beginning will probably end up paying much more later on... Remember YOU are all you have out there.

2 - Light Painting Photo Mosaic

Ryan Nance August 15, 2012

So, these light painting photo mosaics are beautiful. Also, the drawing in photos with light and then assembling into mosaics is about 3 levels of abstraction from the basic idea of photography. The artist Brian Matthew Hart has compiled quite a library of these phenomenal and laborious images.

Ryan Nance August 9, 2012

Water Light Graffiti system in Paris is the work of Artist Antonin Fourneau. Moisture sensitive panels activate a huge grid of LEDs.

The "Water Light Graffiti" is a surface made of thousands of LED illuminated by the contact of water. You can use a paintbrush, a water atomizer, your fingers or anything damp to sketch a brightness message or just to draw. Water Light Graffiti is a wall for ephemeral messages in the urban space without deterioration. A wall to communicate and share magically in the city.
