Portraits of People from the Lower Omo River Valley in Ethiopia by Joey L.

Ryan Nance February 11, 2019

We marvelled recently at Holy Men: Varanasi, India by Joey L, a stunning portrait series of people Varanasi, India. Well, Joey L. has even more great work in his portfolio (which includes top Hollywood stars and icons). He has a great deal of connection with the people of the Lower Omo River Valley in southern Ethiopia.

These attentive portraits display an interest, affinity and affection for each of the subjects.

He has also been working on a narrative film project on Kickstarter called "People of the Delta" Film Project" (see the video below), that was fully funded a year ago. I am looking forward to the final project.

Check out all of his work »

Here's a pitch video I made for my Kickstarter project "People of the Delta". I wanted to share on Vimeo because Kickstarter's embed settings are not high resolution. You can check out everything about the project on the Kickstarter website here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joeyl/people-of-the-delta-film-project Here's some information about the project: People of the Delta is a cinematic narrative film collaborating with real people and stories from the tribes of Ethiopia's Omo Valley.

The script was written with true events in mind, shaped from the collective wisdom of stories handed down from the elders of the Dassanach and Hamar tribes. These two tribes are historically known for competing against one another for the limited amount of fertile land found along the Omo River. This fragile way of life becomes the backbone of our film’s plot.
Conflict over resources extends to every culture and country on the globe today, and is expressed with an entirely unique perspective in the film.

The story is told in two chapters from two unique perspectives. Kulcho- a young boy from the Hamar tribe who becomes a warrior, and Bona- an elder chief of the Daasanach. Although they are from rival tribes, their lives become connected. Joey L.
