Created using FES2014 data from Aviso+, this map displays maximum tidal ranges (the difference between the lowest low tide and highest high tide) around the world. As tides are primarily an ocean phenomenon, the data is presented in an ocean-centric Spilhaus projection.

This map of the worlds tides come from Dave Taylor at Pathfinder Geospatial not only is enchanting in introducing to me a Spilhaus projection (a map that emphasizes the seamless connection of water masses surrounded by continents) but is also mesmerizing in its details and color.

Another of Taylor’s maps charts out the varying levels of salt in the world’s oceans, a difference I hadn’t really thought that much about before.
